Top 10 Worst Excuses for Late Tax Returns. An SFS Tax Problem Solutions Blog. 

Even tax preparers have to have fun sometime. The IRS doesn’t care why you are late on filing your tax return, but these excuses are just too creative not to share.

1. My tax return was on my yacht, which caught fire.

What was your tax return doing on the yacht, exactly?

 

 

2. A wasp in my car caused me to have an accident and my tax return, which was inside, was destroyed.

Leaving your car windows open is just asking for it, apparently.

 

 

3. My wife helps me with my tax return, but she had a headache for ten days.

 Thinking about doing your tax return has been known to cause headaches and pains in the neck and well… other areas.

Next time tell her you are taking her on an extended vacation, and sneak the return in, really quick-like.

 

 

 

4. My dog ate my tax return…and all the reminders.

Might we suggest some dog treats? Or food for that matter? Sounds like you’ve been starving that dog.

And by the way… did you believe your kids about the homework?

 

5. I couldn’t complete my tax return, because my husband left me and took our accountant with him.

Our condolences on the loss of your accountant… a good one can be hard to find. You should be able to get an extension and transcripts of previous year’s returns from the IRS though as a starting point.

 

6. I am currently trying to find a new accountant. My child scribbled all over the tax return, so I couldn’t send it back.

Try e-filing next time. Or leaving it where your children can’t get to it.

 

7. I work for myself, but a colleague borrowed my tax return to photocopy it and lost it.

So you work for yourself and also have colleagues? Something sounds fishy here…

With all your social security number and private income information on the return, we don’t see why you would lend it out.

 

8. My husband told me the deadline was April 30^th.

We suggest you check your husband against Google next time.

 

 

9. The postman doesn’t deliver to my house.

Do you live in alligator-infested waters? Have you installed a mailbox?

Seriously, have you tried talking to his or her supervisor?

Get a ride to your local post office and insist on some action.

 

10. I don’t have the money.

Ignoring your tax debt would be the worst thing you could do.

So what’s a broke person supposed to do? Communicate.
