All of the Credentials can sound like M-O-U-S-E

Let the Buyer Beware of the Credentials and the People They Buy Into

EA, CPA, PA, ESQ, M-O-U-S-E! When it comes to tax professionals, there are a lot of credentials floating around.

Most people are busy living their lives instead of diving into the details of any industry credentials. And rightfully so! There are many things that are more important than decoding designations.

There is a time, however, when it becomes very important.

Let the Buyer Beware of the Credentials Example

If you have a health issue. If that’s the case, you’ll make sure there is an MD (Medical Doctor) behind that name!

The same goes for when you receive a notice from the IRS (or if you haven’t filed in years). You’ll want a professional to help you work through these issues.

Did you know that you can be a tax preparer simply by providing a PTIN (personal tax identification number) to the IRS? That’s right… you don’t have to have any schooling or experience to call yourself one. Just file that number and WHAM! You’re in business!

Now, if you have very simple needs you might be tempted to try a McTaxes franchise or a cheaper-than-dirt, so-called tax professional. (Even though that can do more harm than good).

Let the Buyer Beware of the Credentials and Look for the Most Qualified

The thing is, when it matters, you want the best, the most qualified. And there are designations given by the IRS and the state that mean different things when it comes to tax professionals.

Needless to say, owing the IRS is not fun. The penalties and interest keep adding up the longer you owe… and that’s whether you or your “tax professional” made a mistake, on purpose or by accident.

So do your homework when hiring a tax professional.

Trust me, it will pay off in saved tax dollars, fewer headaches, and peace of mind!
